Session 9

Brad Anderson is turning out to be one of my favorite directors,

This genuinely rattling horror film finds its home right in your cerebrum (part of your brain controlling sanity? sounds right...) and refuses to leave. complete with one of the most stunning and terrifying locations I have seen in a horror film, Session 9 is a genre defining psychological mess of a horror flick (in a good way)

Daylight

A lot slower than most in the genre, but still very unsettling, and better watched as a piece of art than a narrative.  Despite some rough edges, director David Barker gives us a fresh take on a fairly familiar, but not quite yet overdone story-line.  It is held together at times by strong acting and believable characters.

Visioneers

bizarre, chaotic and extremely unique.  The superb acting from Galifianakis alone was enough to hold interest, but i couldn't help from constantly questioning "what the hell am I watching." Almost a must watch, but keep an open mind.

Very interested in what others thought of it (trailer below)

Transsiberian

I saw Anderson's, "The Machinist" a while back, and loved it, but never really checked out anything else from him...mistake.  Anderson had a couple choices with "Transsiberian,"  He could have made it very cliche and over done, consisting completely of things we have seen before, or he could have made it unique, with unexpected plot twists and excellent story development, all while providing the realistic feeling of being somewhere you absolutely don't belong.  Good thing he chose the latter.

The Innkeepers

A well written indy horror film, that leaves it up to the viewers imagination to provide the scares.  Ti West (V/H/S) does a great job at developing the story without overwhelming us with cliches or unnecessary gore.  Look forward to more from Mr. West in the future

God Bless America

This hilarious satire shows how easily younger generations are affected by the media and publicity that surrounds it today.  The excessive brutality at times over shadows how sad this film actually is, but the like-able characters leave us wondering who the "bad guy" really is.

The Snowtown Murders

THIS is why I love Australian cinema, it's dark, depressing, extremely aggressive, and beautiful to watch.  This film, based on a true story depicts the horrifying story of "Australia's worst serial killer" John Bunting, and his ability to convince others to help him perform his grizzly murders.  not for the weak stomach, but defiantly a film that all lovers of Australian cinema should see

V/H/S

I heard about this MIFF selection while spending time in Australia earlier this year, and i was instantly excited to see it, unfortunately it just didn't work for me.  The concept was good, but the execution, not so much.  the story seemed to be undeveloped and jumped around way too much.  Seemed lazy, with a major lack of attention to detail.  There was never a point that hooked me in, by the end I was only in it for the gore...or lack there of

See if you are a fan of found footage, and about every horror genre mashed into one

A little bit about vampires

The character development in "Vampire Diaries" through the seasons has been amazing, as sappy as the show can get, the writing is on par, and the balance between teenage drama and awesome vampire action make for a very entertaining show for all ages, not to mention the occasional tear feast...

Shout out to the music supervisor, because the soundtrack adds emotion to anything going on, on screen

Shotgun Stories

Michael Shannon impresses once again in this slow paced revenge drama.  Great character development anchors a very intense and brutal script, in which the words "family problems" is taken to a whole new level.  Revenge goes from ugly to worse in this must see film from director Jeff Nichols (also directed Shannon in "Take shelter")

Good Neighbors

"Good Neighbors"

This little doozy of a film surprised me. Jay Baruchel has grown on me over the past couple of years, and he nailed his role in this film.  Anyway, alongside him was an excellent cast and great looking sets, with and a few different twists and turns, including a pretty impressive ending.  An intriguing little murder mystery, that is much more than that.
